When the slider is all the way to the left, the strands will copy the normal from the underlying source mesh. When the slider is all the way to the right the normal will be the same as the actual strand/card mesh plane. For short fur Source Mesh Normal tends to give best results but for bushes and grass Card Normal may work better.
